Editor’s Note: This letter to the editor is in response to both Ali McIntosh’s editorial “Ignorance, homophobia on Facebook” in the April 4 edition of The Carrier and Joshua Willis’ letter to the editor, “Homophobic bullying on campus,” in the April 11 edition of The Carrier.
Regarding all of the recent talk on homophobia on the Internet and at Berry, I would have to say I am disappointed in Berry’s reaction to the issue.
The students who were here last year may remember an incident in which a racial slur was written on a student’s door. Outrage against racism ensued and campus-wide emails were sent. However, as Joshua Willis pointed out in last week’s paper, a homophobic slur was written on a student’s door more recently and this incident has been swept under the rug.
Where is the outrage from the administration for this? To me, this is Berry’s way of saying, “We won’t sit by and accept discrimination based on race, but when it comes to discrimination based on sexuality, we’ll just look the other way.”
I believe Berry’s silence about the homophobic slur on the student’s door is not only a slap in the face to the student herself, but a slap in the face to every student who isn’t heterosexual. However, I am very appreciative of the faculty members who do stand with the non-heterosexual students, and I am thankful that Ali McIntosh brought the issue to light again.
