The Vikings men’s golf team hosted the George H. Bedwell Memorial Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament hosted 10 teams with a total of 62 players competing, and took place at the local Stonebridge Golf Club.

After the first day of the tournament the Vikings were in fifth place with a final total of 299. Junior Alex Elmore shot 36 both days. He led the Vikings and ended with a score of 72, which is on par for the course.

Additional Berry “A team” players shot under 80 as well. senior John Hall shot 38 and 35 with a final score of 73, which is one stroke over par. Freshman Tommy McCloskey shot 37 and 38 with a final score of 75 and freshman Chase Kulczak hit 42 the first day and 37 on the second with a final score of 79.

Berry’s “B team” shot a final score of 314 on the first day and ended in ninth place.

The Vikings also played in the individual category.

Freshman Joey Dando played for the men’s golf team and shot 38 the first day and 39 the second day.

“On the first day I did not hit the ball very well but I was able to get up and down the green better than most of the other guys playing,” Dando said. “There was definitely a home field advantage. The course has some unique green, which can be kind of difficult to play on if you are not accustomed to it.”

After the second day of the tournament the Vikings moved up in the rankings to fourth place. The University of Cumberlands won the entire tournament with a final score of 578. The Vikings’ final score was 601 and tied for fourth place with Shorter University.

“The teams and myself played an average performance,” Dando said. “We got fourth overall but I think we could have done a lot better.”

The Vikings are now looking to play in the SAA (Southern Athletic Association) Championship.

“We are looking to defeat the leading champions, Oglethorpe University,” Hall said. “We will have to play some pretty great golf to do it. But, you know what? I got a funny feeling about it. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.”
