The Berry College language department has decided to hire a full time German and French professor instead of renewing the five year proposal which allowed Fulbright students from around the world to come to Berry.

The Fulbright program, run by the United States government, has two tracks, it offers scholarship money to students from foreign countries to come to the U.S. to both teach and take classes as well as giving students within the U.S. the same opportunity if they go abroad.

Dr. Vincent Grégoire, an associate professor of French at Berry College, said “It’s a wonderful experience for the institution, it’s a wonderful experience for them, it’s a win-win.”

Five years ago, the language department submitted a proposal, which was accepted, to allow two Fulbright students to come to Berry each year to teach and take classes for a year.

Dr. Christine Anton, an associate professor of German at Berry College, said “It was never meant as a permanent solution; we were looking for somebody to teach the languages. At that time we had no money to employ anybody.”

With the expiration of the proposal, the language department has decided to hire Dr. Annette Haenle-Daniels, who currently teaches German courses at Kennesaw State University, to teach French and German classes full-time in the upcoming semesters at Berry College.

Anton said the timing was ideal because “We were actually informed by the NY Fulbright office in charge of setting up students at various colleges/universities, that due to budget cuts we were among those institutions that would not get a Fulbright student in German for this coming year.”
