A college student’s guide to the 2016 presidential candidates: Ben Carson

In a survey of 100 Berry students, 35 percent said they were leaning towards Ben Carson as the main Republican candidate.

Carson is the leading Republican candidate among Berry students, and he comes in a close second in the national polls following Donald Trump.

His conservative views have gained him supporters, but his violent past has also caused some controversy.

A major problem Ben Carson would like to tackle is education. “Our education system must be run by involved parents and engaged teachers and principals,” Carson says on his website, “Any attempt by faceless federal bureaucrats to take over our local schools must be defeated.” Carson also believes that Common Core should be overturned.

Another hot button issue in America that Carson is concerned about is abortion. Carson is against abortions, stating, “My commitment to protect innocent life goes back decades. For years I have helped raise money for a wide spectrum of faith-based entities that assist expectant mothers with the birth of their child by providing a variety of valuable, pro-life services.”

Ben Carson is also a strong supporter of Health Savings Accounts which is a program that allows individuals who are covered by high-deductible health plans to receive tax-preferred treatment thus allowing them to save money on medical expenses.

Carson also believes that we should ratify a Balanced Budget Amendment (Which is a law in the Constitution that requires a state not spend more than it receives in income) to help with the nation’s economy. On his website, he said, “Each generation’s greatest responsibility is to pass on a greater opportunity to the next generation. Our generation is failing in this regard. A Balanced Budget Amendment to our Constitution will lead to a better future for our grandchildren.”

Another issue in America is minimum wage. Workers for companies like McDonald’s and Burger King have gone on strike in hopes of raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Carson does not believe in raising the minimum wage. During a debate on Nov. 10, he said, “Every time we raise the minimum wage, the number of jobless people increases.”

Carson believes federal judges have been driving faith out of our society, and believes we need to bring faith and religion back into society. “The United States of America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles,” He says on his website. “We can and should be proud of that fact. It served us well for almost 200 years.”

Dr. Ben Carson has recently fallen under heavy media attention after information had surfaced of him having a violent past. In an interview with Megyn Kelly on Nov. 5, he said, “My mother was trying to get me to wear something and I didn’t want to wear it. Picked up a hammer, hit her in the head with it. Fortunately, my brother caught it from behind.”

During a debate on This Week on ABC, Carson also said, “At age 14, another teenager angered me and I had a large camping knife and I tried to stab him in the abdomen.” However, Carson does not believe this information will keep people from voting for him.
