It takes a lot to be a student athlete, but junior nursing major, tennis player and Bonner scholar Mary Cerny manages to balance both. From the classroom to tennis practice to clinical rotations, Mary has a knack for keeping things together.

“Nursing, tennis and service are important to me, which motivates me to keep pursing them,” Mary said. “I feel like I need all of them to have balance in my day.”

Mary said she enjoys nursing because she can learn the best possible way to take care of people.

“I want to use every opportunity I can to be the hands and feet of Christ and I believe that nursing is the best way for me to do that,” she said. “Service goes along with my drive to serve God.”

Mary also plays line one singles and line one doubles for the Berry’s Women’s Tennis team.

“I love being a part of a team, especially my team,” Mary said. “Practice is a way for me to unwind at the end.”

As far as being a Bonner scholar, Mary’s clinical rotations count as service hours. Students in the program have to complete a minimum of 10 hours per week.
