Mount Berry, GA—The Berry experience doesn’t stop at Berry during the school year, it also continues during the summer in Rome. When most people hear Rome, Georgia they think of a small, boring, and dull town with nothing to do, but that is quite the contrary. There are a variety of ways to have fun in Rome if you have to stay at Berry for the summer.
“One good thing about living here during the summer in Rome is the block parties,” Alex Moon, 2015-2016 Head SOAR leader said. “They block off all of Broad St. and there is live music on both ends, all the restaurants have deals, and inflatables for kids. It’s one of my favorite things to do in the summer here because it doesn’t happen during the school year.”
Rome may be a small and flourishing town but it has a lot to offer during the summer time. Rome is a big outdoor recreation city. From its various trails, rolling hills, parks, and camping sites there is a lot to explore.
Rock Mountain Recreation Area is a great place to go if you like to swim and hike. It is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk.
“We called it Armuchee beach, but it’s called Rocky Mountain Recreation.” Junior Angelica Miller said. “It’s where the all the SOAR leaders would go in their spare time to swim and hike.”
Not only are there various activities to do in Rome, but there are many exciting Roman places to visit. There is the Labyrinth of Rome, Rome-Floyd E.C.O. River Education Center, and the Rome Braves stadium. The Labyrinth of Rome is a big amphitheater that was built during the great depression where local groups will show movies and have cookouts during the summer.
Also on campus there are a variety of activities. You can hike up to the reservoir or visit the House of Dreams. Berry’s large 27,000 acre campus allow you the option to do a variety of outdoor activities.
“The Gates (Scholarship students) do pranks during the summer, mostly to the freshmen,” Kassie Jones said. “I remember last year the Gates put cups in front of your door, so no matter where you stepped you were going to spill water on the floor.”
Regardless of who is on campus and what time of the year it is there is still a plethora of things to do in Rome.
