A Japanese translation of “Anni Albers and Ancient American Textiles: From Bauhaus to Black Mountain,” authored by Virginia Gardner Troy, associate professor of art, has been published by Kuwasawa Gakuen Foundation in association with Tuttle-Mori Agency and Tokyo Zokei University.
Troy is not a newcomer to printed works. The book, written in English, was originally published in 2002 as PhD dissertation. She also released a book in 2006 called “The Modernist Textile: Europe and America 1890-1940.”
“Anni Albers and Ancient American Textiles” tells the true story of a German weaver who studied at the Bauhaus school and moved to North Carolina and taught at the new experimental Black Mountain College.
“I find Anni Albers to be a very intriguing person,” Troy said. “My book is all about how the ancient arts impacted her modern designs.”
Troy’s book has had success since its publication. In 2015, Troy was invited to Yale to speak at a symposium on Anni Albers. She is scheduled to go to Japan this month to give a talk about the Bauhaus at Tokyo Zokei University.
“It’s neat that the people in Japan are really interested in design and textiles.” Troy said. “Now they are starting to become interested in the Bauhaus as a design school as well.”
