No injuries in car fire near Child Development Center
A Berry visitor’s truck caught on fire outside the Child Development Center shortly before 3 p.m. on Friday.
No one was injured.
Dakota Ray had come to campus to play disc golf with a friend. When he started the truck to leave, he noticed that smoke was coming out from underneath the vehicle.
He got a fire extinguisher from a nearby building and worked on putting out the fire until the Rome Fire Department arrived.
Ray’s truck, which he had worked on with his father, was severely damaged in the fire.
“The only thing I really keep is my toolbox,” he said. “Everything else is pretty much useless.”
Ray said he is grateful that the fire occurred in a parking lot rather than while he was driving.
“I’m just glad I wasn’t driving down the road,” he said. “That probably would have been twice as bad.”
Captain Jamie Stone of the Rome Fire Department said the cause of the fire was not yet clear.
