In 2008, The Floyd County Technical High School became a conversion College and Career Academy dedicated to the assistance for helping people make the transition into a college and career environment. In 2013, the school added academic classes to their curriculum, specifically focusing on math and science through the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics program, or STEM. The FCSCCA has, in recent years, partnered with Berry College and Georgia Power to create a “Maker Academy team” consisting of engineering and non-engineering students, as well as Berry College student mentors who focus on various creative technologies projects.
A new creative team is currently being chosen to continue the partnership, so that students can learn skills such as programming, soldering, designing copper boards, 3D designing and printing, and a wealth of other skills to aid in the creative process. Eric Waters, the CEO and Principal of the school, has stated that the FCSCCA’s mission is “To provide a rigorous, career-based curriculum which ensures the success of our students in a 21st century economy.” For more information on the school’s purpose, mission, and opportunities to be involved as a student mentor, visit the school’s website at www.floydcca.sharpschool.net.
