A Canvas Called Vienna

by Eric Jackson

Street art is one of the many ways Viennese artists choose to express themselves. However, some residents believe the historic buildings should be preserved and not come into contact with street art. Others see that the street art provides a display of color and emotion that benefits the city. In order to appeal to both sides, Vienna has designated free spaces, such as the area along the Danube Canal, for street artists to display their work. Recently, a man named “Puber” has travelled Vienna, spraying his name sporadically throughout the city, including placing his name on other people’s artwork and private property. Some Viennese have called into question the intentions behind graffiti and street art. Despite the concern, street art continues to grow in Vienna.
