Dear Vicki,
I know this isn’t a typical advice question but I really really miss my dog from back home, but I live too far away to go visit regularly. What can I do to feel a little less alone?
Sincerely,
Petless
Dear Petless,
Thank you for reaching out! I know how it feels to be separated from your animals, and it can be very hard. There are several things you can do to make it through.
One of the best things to do if you are missing being around dogs is to go to Petland here in Rome. You can choose one of their puppies or kittens and play with them for free! There are a lot of animals who would love to play with you, and you can go during any of their open hours.
Another great option is volunteering at the Floyd County Animal Control Shelter. While you are there, you can play with their puppies, older dogs and all of their cats. You can take them out on walks in their yard as well as give them baths and hang out with them in their puppy playroom. This is a great option because you have access to all sorts of animals who would love to have your attention, and you’re providing a valuable community service.
If you are feeling friendly, you could get to know some of the students at Poland, a pet-friendly cottage on our campus. Your new friend most likely wouldn’t mind letting you hang out with their animal. Also, when you sign up for housing for next year, you could apply to get into Poland yourself and either bring your dog with you, or adopt a new friend.
The last option I have for you is to go from petless to pet owner without being in Poland! In all dorms here on campus you are able to have a fish in up to a 20-gallon tank. If you don’t have a lot of room, Betta fish are the perfect companions because they are beautiful, tough and like to live a solitary life.
Something else you could do would be to hang pictures of your pet in your room or to get your parents to help you Skype your dog! I hope this helped Petless, and if you have any more questions, be sure to ask again!
Sincerely,
Vicki
