Vicki the Viking, Campus Carrier Advice Columnist
Dear Vicki,
I know I should be enthusiastic about voting and getting support in our generation for the coming election, but I’m just tired. I’m frustrated at politics, and I want this election to be over. Do you have any advice for getting through the next few weeks?
Sincerely,
Done
Dear Done,
Don’t feel bad for being unenthusiastic – it can be difficult to be excited for candidates that you may not strongly support. Think about an issue that you are passionate about. Whether it’s taxes, environmental protection, education or healthcare, whoever is elected will have an impact on that issue. Your vote will help determine which candidate will influence it.
Another way is to talk to friends who are enthusiastic and hear why. They might bring up points you haven’t thought about. While you may disagree with their reasons, it’s still good to talk to different people and try to gain an understanding of different views.
If the choice of candidates is the main reason you aren’t enthusiastic, the best advice I have for you is to look beyond the national election and toward local elections. Get involved in your local government and help decide who is going to represent you in a more day-to-day context. If you don’t spend much time at home, you have the option of using your Berry address to register to vote here in Rome. You can still register for an absentee ballot in Georgia if need be, and don’t forget that Election Day is on Nov. 8.
You said you were frustrated with politics, and the best way to alleviate that might be becoming more involved on a local level. Don’t get discouraged, your vote is important both in this presidential election and in local ones.
As far as getting through the next few weeks, self-care will be very helpful! Take a break from social media and politics for a day. Go to Mountain Campus and relax by one of the ponds during a long class break. Make time to be alone and focus on doing something you love. Make sure to sleep for a full eight hours once in a while. Don’t let your frustration get in the way of taking care of yourself!
Sincerely,
Vicki
